Character Info
◎ Character's Name: Trowa Barton (alt: No Name)
◎ Character's Canon: Gundam Wing
◎ Character's Age: ~15
◎ Canon Point: Episode 12, after Heero wakes up.
◎ Background/History: Wiki link
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Yes to hacking skills. He's not Heero Yuy, who is hacker extraordinaire, but he has decent skills in breaking and entering (computer systems). No sixth sense, however.
◎ Personality: The first thing that comes to mind when observing Trowa is that he's very calm and cool-headed, almost to the point of being impassive. However, as the series progresses, he displays a deep and multi-faceted character. His main points are ones that utilize his collected rationale on top of his impressive skills, intelligence, and determination. Underneath all of those things, though, there's a young man who wants to make a difference and is caring enough to push through the obstacles presented in the series.
But, as stated before, the outer shell is the one that most people walk away with knowing. He displays this sort of unperturbed air on multiple occasions. The first being when he's introduced in the show; he's on an enemy base, a barrage of enemy fire going past him in his Gundam, but he doesn't even seem to flinch. Nor does he seem particularly bothered when in episode 10 Heero self-detonates. Trowa is silently shocked, though he doesn't panic or give any indication of fear. When compared to some of the other pilots, who react in a more vocal and surprised way. Even Zechs, who'd been fighting Heero at the time, shows more emotional range. Instead, Trowa opts to pick up Heero's body from the field and then retreat (given the circumstances, the pilots didn't have much other choice). Afterwards, he assists Heero across parts of Europe, shaking off OZ associates tailing them with ease and a cool headed rationale.
What shows off his inability to be ruffled the most, though, is when he infiltrates OZ as one of the officers. During his initial test piloting venture to get into the ranks, he's asked to destroy the Gundam Deathscythe. Without blinking, he follows the order, giving no indication to his superiors that he was affected by the situation. Further into the infiltration, he also punches pilot 02 (Duo) to silence him (with superior acting skills; even Wufei is duped momentarily). During this time, he's called out by Lady Une's subordinate, Nichols, who accuses him of being a traitor and a possible threat. Under this duress, he seems to shrug it off, not giving the other any verbal ammunition with which to fight him, instead answering the emotional barbs with logic and patience.
These particular instances are supplemented by his determination to see things through to the end. Trowa's brand of determination can also come out as a sort of ruthlessness– when he's decided upon something, he doesn't back down. Examples of him digging his heels in can be seen when he's going to self-detonate his Gundam in order to send a message to the colonies and OZ, as well as when he infiltrates the opposing side. Nothing is going to stop him from getting to complete the mission. Looking into his history, this stubbornness shows up in his volunteering to take the original Trowa Barton's place in Operation Meteor, when the man was killed. He'd been a nameless engineer for the Heavyarms Gundam, but takes up Trowa's name, place, mobile suit, and goes through the subsequent training to carry out the operation. This is, according to him, even after the people of colony L3 hadn't quite been unanimous on the use of the Gundam to help them.
As such, it speaks to his skills and intelligence that any of the above are even possible. Trained as a mercenary at an early age, he can basically pilot or drive anything as long as it has a running engine. All he needs is a few moments to get acquainted– this is exemplified when he pilots Wing Gundam in Antarctica, a basic Leo mobile suit in OZ's test, and then later, the Vayeate while undercover at OZ. Beyond piloting, he's able to fix his own suits, even going so far as to modify Heavyarms' left arm to hold a beam saber when Heero was borrowing it. Moreover, after picking Heero up from his self-detonation, he's able to help the other pilot recover, keeping watch over him for about a month to ensure he doesn't die. Lastly, he's a great acrobat, something that's mentioned in passing by the Ringmaster at the circus he works for. Said Ringmaster states he "could be one of the best" as he's watching Trowa leave (episode 14).
Underneath all of the composure, persistence, and intellect, Trowa is actually a very caring kind of person. The same example that shows his being unfazed also doubles as one of the biggest tipoffs to how much he's willing to go out of his way for people: taking care of Heero after the self-detonation event. It almost goes unsaid that he didn't have to pick the other pilot up and spend his time bringing him back from the brink of death. Certainly, he didn't have to continue to support him in the aftermath, as Heero went on a personal journey through Europe to attempt to tie off loose ends. But, he does, making sure the other doesn't push himself too hard and helping to shake off anyone who could be following the two pilots.
When they eventually end up getting cornered by Noin, who comes to them on behalf of Zechs Merquise, Trowa leaps to Heero's defense. And when Heero is challenged to fight Zechs again, Trowa modifies his own Gundam to ensure the other pilot can use his mobile suit without aggravating an injury on his left arm. It's around this point that he continues to help eliminate the search party that's on the lookout for the two pilots as well as Zechs himself– he kills the main portion of the search, but after he finishes, he has to physically pull his fingers away from his controls. After he does so, he's clearly upset at having to cause senseless deaths, questioning why he has to keep doing this. The bout doesn't last long, but he's still thinking of other people because he then asks Noin to reload the armaments in his Gundam to make sure there's enough for Heero when he starts his fight with Zechs.
Later, after the pilots end up back in space, he's the first to check how close he is in comparison to where Duo gets captured, worried about the other pilot. Conclusively, he relaxes when he realizes Heero is closer, noting that the other will absolutely do something to help. Duo breaks out with Heero's help, but leaves his Gundam Deathscythe behind, which Trowa is commanded to destroy during his second test as he attempts to go undercover with OZ. While Trowa doesn't disregard the order, he's seen in his cockpit, having just blinked away tears at the destruction of Deathscythe itself. He understood how Duo would've felt, if the other pilot were there. Further into his infiltration, when Duo, Wufei, and Heero are all trapped at the Lunar Base, he does end up punching Duo for his "smart" mouth. But, this is part of a guise; after he leaves the cell with Heero in tow, Duo reveals to the momentarily duped Wufei that Trowa is definitely on their side. The pilot of Deathscythe pulls out a tiny projector with the plans for the secretly revised Deathscythe and Shenlong Gundams, which has a quick message from Trowa stating he thought they'd appreciate the knowledge.
Lastly, once his hard earned trust is gained, it's seemingly difficult to break it. This is shown specifically when Quatre shows up in Wing Zero, beginning to destroy colonies. Heero is suspicious that it could be the blonde pilot, but Trowa seems to write off the suspicion immediately. He believes in Quatre's character so much that he almost doesn't even consider that the pilot could've temporarily lost it. Such faith backfires when Quatre attacks him in Wing Zero, blowing off half of the Vayeate mobile suit. Still, his determination flares up and when Quatre has Heero basically cornered, Trowa flies in between the blast with Vayeate once again, taking the hit for Heero instead. This snaps Quatre out of his lapse in judgment as the suit Trowa is in explodes after he's continued to reason with the blonde pilot. One of his last thoughts is that he hopes Heero will go easy on Quatre, regardless of his actions.
Thus, initially, Trowa seems perfectly neutral, almost to the point of uncaring. His exterior is one of stoicism– the less words he can get away with using, the better. The few responses he does give tend to be rational, if a little judgmental (or sassy), and mostly contemptuous towards other people. However, digging into his character further shows that he's resolute, knowledgable, compassionate, and loyal, if not particularly talkative.
◎ Powers/Abilities: While Trowa is considered a normal human with no special powers, he does have a lot of skills that go above and beyond everyday life. For one, he pilots a mobile suit known as a Gundam and is considered one of the best pilots the world has seen (this later shocks OZ when he tests for them). He is proficient in the use of multiple types of weapons and firearms (usually handguns), as well as having extensive knowledge in explosives and hacking. Trowa has considerable skill in things dealing with espionage and deep cover missions, complemented by his ability to meld himself with a situation and keep his head for the duration. Related to these items, he is also an accomplished acrobat, sometimes utilizing this in missions; though it is largely used in his cover working for the circus. Two other talents he seems to have are the ability to work with animals with little to no effort (he calms a lion, most likely because he shows no fear) and a gift with playing the flute (which he plays alongside Quatre's violin in the episode after they meet).
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory: Handgun, throwing knife, half a clown mask, Heavyarms Gundam.
CEREALIA-Specific
◎ Element: Earth– because contrary to what people may think of him, Trowa is a determinator. He shows through several variations that stubbornness is one of his biggest character traits, for better or worse.
◎ Sense: Hearing– he's an observer, but more than watching what people do, he listens very intently and is able to parse through the information to come to a conclusion. He has incredible intuition which, when combined with the ability to hear the meaning underneath what someone is saying, is almost always right.
